Does your pet have bad breath?

If you said yes, you might be interested to know more about Periodontal Disease that affects dogs and cats.

According to a study done by the American Veterinary Dental Society, more than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats had developed Periodontal Disease by 3 years of age which makes dental disease the most prevalent disease in companion animals. Another recent study has shown that more than 92% of companion animals in United States are suffering from some Periodontal Disease stages.

Periodontal Disease is a painful condition caused by accumulation of resistant types of bacteria around the teeth, gingival margins and inside the gingival pocket which destroy the periodontal ligament that connects the teeth to the bones and eventually cause tooth loss.

Multiple studies have also found an association between periodontal disease and pathologic changes in internal organs and other measures of systemic inflammation.

Oral infection, oral trauma, or malocclusions can cause pain and loss of function. This can make the act of chewing very uncomfortable or even painful to the point that your pet may not want to eat.

However, pets are not able to talk and complain, and since they are very good at hiding their pain, often times owners do not notice their problem, until it is a serious issue.

Bad breath is the first and the most obvious sign of Periodontal Disease. If your pet has the following they may have Periodontal Disease:
- Bad breath (The most common)
- Inappetence
- Loosing interest in eating hard treats or hard food
- Eating with tilted head
- Gum bleeding
- Weight loss
- Hiding and behavioral change (mostly in cats).
